A first birthday at home comes down to three decisions: which wall the backdrop goes on, where the cake table sits, and what time the decoration has to be finished. Everything else follows from those.
Pick the wall before you pick the theme
Every photograph taken that day will have the same wall behind it. Walk around your flat and find the one with the most clear space and the least clutter you cannot move — usually a bedroom wall or the wall behind the sofa. That is your backdrop. Do not choose a wall because it is where the TV is; the TV will be in every photograph.
Then the cake table
It wants to be in front of or beside the backdrop, not across the room, because that is where everyone will crowd. An arch over the cake table is the single element that makes a home setup look planned rather than assembled, and it does not need much space.
Two or three colours, no more
Pastels photograph gently in daylight; brights read better in an evening room under artificial light. Add one metallic or chrome as an accent. Five colours on a wall looks like a shop, not a party — this is the most common mistake we are asked to fix.
Timing, which is the part people get wrong
Work backwards from when your first guest arrives, not from when the party officially starts. Relatives arrive early at a first birthday, reliably. A typical home setup takes our crew two to three hours, so we plan to be finished and gone well before that.
What about the child
For a one-year-old the decoration is entirely for the adults and the photographs, so build it for the camera. Keep balloons off the floor where the baby will be, avoid loose ribbon and small foil pieces at floor level, and put the height into the wall rather than into anything free-standing that can be pulled over.
